The future of WordPress is here

Not a photo of WordPress developers working on new features.

The new WordPress editor is aptly named after Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg, the man who ushered in the Renaissance in Europe with his introduction of a printing press using movable type in the 15th century.

What does this have to do with your website over 500 years later? The new Gutenberg editor is the biggest change to WordPress in the past decade, promising a rebirth for online publishing. It allows you to easily add and rearrange blocks of content visually, without thinking about the magical code that makes it work — that’s what you pay us for!

At Mothership Arts, we have always striven to provide our clients with websites that are easy to update without knowing HTML, and most importantly, without worrying about your changes looking out of tune with your branding style guide. Gutenberg allows us to continue to offer this service while allowing you even more control over how your content is presented.

We can now give our clients a truly custom content management system through the use of custom reusable blocks in addition to a plugin configuration tailored to the unique needs of your business.

If you are using WordPress, you may have noticed a new notice in your dashboard about Gutenberg becoming the default editor in the next major release, expected before 2019. It is currently available as a plugin, and while it has a few flaws, you can expect those to be ironed out with the official release.

Worried? Don’t be!

Don’t try this on your live site. Not every theme is ready, but we’re here to help. Contact Mothership Arts to have your site cloned to a test server, we’ll turn it into a playground for you to test the new features and check if this upgrade will break your carefully-crafted web presence.

If your current theme is not compatible, we’ll install the plugin to allow you to continue to use the classic editor you know and love (or hate), while keeping up with important system updates. Times change, and websites (even the awesome ones we design) quickly become outdated.

When you’re ready, we’re here to refresh your web design along with your back-end editing experience. Until then, try out the new standard features here.
